Boyce And Garbutt Boost The Ranks

The Grimethorpe Colliery Band is pleased to welcome to its ranks BBb bass player Joe Boyce and Marrianne Garbutt, who joins on 2nd Baritone.

Both players hail from Scotland, Marrianne from Ayrshire and Joe from Glasgow. Marrianne studied Band Musicianship with Pete Christian, Peter Graham and David King, before going on to complete a Masters in Performance. She’s previously played with Wingates, Besses o’ th’ Barn, Pemberton Old and Hammonds.

After spells at his local band Clydebank Burgh, Kirkintilloch and Whitburn, Joe moved with work to Barrow-in-Furness. A long break ensued after Barrow Shipyards folded, and he joins us following spells at J36 and Oldham Band (Lees).

Of the move Marrianne commented “I’m delighted to join Grimethorpe – It’s been a dream of mine to play for a band of this calibre. I look forward to joining properly when the current lockdown is over”, while Joe said he is “delighted to be joining GCB, a boyhood dream after watching many super performances on tv when I was growing up, Particularly Steve Sykes’ performances in the 80s”.

Both join us with a wealth of experience. A spokesperson for the band said  “Grimethorpe wish to thank Neil Beecham our departing BBb bass player. The band members are sorry to see Neil leave. We wish him well in the future and in his appointment at the ISB, which will allow him a lot more time to focus on his young family. He’ll always be welcome in the bandroom”. Speaking on the move, Neil said “My (nearly) two years with GCB have been great and given me some amazing opportunities and experiences and I feel that it has dramatically changed me as a player. Grimethorpe is a great band with an unrivalled heritage and a bright future in the direction it is heading.”
