Milnrow Reveal New Principal Cornet
Milnrow Band are delighted to announce the appointment of David Gillson to the Principal Cornet seat. David joins the band from the Fairey Band of Stockport where he played Repiano Cornet and deputised as Principal Cornet too.
For a young musician David has a wealth of experience to bring to the band, he has represented Great Britain at youth level with both the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain (NYBBGB) and Territorial Youth Band of the Salvation Army. More recently he has played at the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games 2012 in London with the Grimethorpe Colliery Band and has been a finalist in the BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Award 2014 and 2015. David also previously held the position of Flugel Horn soloist with the Foden’s Band.
Speaking about his appointment, David told A4B: “I’m delighted to take up the opportunity of Principal Cornet in such a dedicated and hard working band. The band have had an extremely successful year and I look forward to leading them on stage at the British Open and the National Finals. The welcome I have received from the band has been encouraging and I am excited to see what the future holds for Milnrow. I also want to take this opportunity to thank Fairey’s for the support and opportunities they have given me throughout my time with them and I wish them all the best in the future.”
A spokesperson for the band told A4B: ‘The band are excited to have a player like David joining the band on a full time basis, 2017 has already surpassed 2013 as being the most successful year in the band’s now 148 year history, and it is hoped that this new appointment will continue to cement Milnrow’s reputation as a growing force within the Brass Band movement nationally.
The band would like to place on record their expressed thanks to all players that have deputised on the Principal Cornet seat in recent history but specifically to Senne La Mela, Iain Culross, Rob Westacott, Jamie Smith and the band’s own Assistant Principal Cornet, Bek Chrimes.’
David commences his role with immediate effect.
