Grimethorpe Youth Band to Expands Across UK

The Grimethorpe Colliery Band is delighted to be supporting a new initiative for 2019 which will see an expansion of its highly successful Youth Band programme into new areas of the UK.

The first event will take place on Saturday 2nd February at the Albemarle Centre in Hull, with support from, and in collaboration with, a number of regional music service providers from Hull, East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.

The event will build upon the proven formula of delivering a fun and educational programme of brass and percussion workshops for up to 50 young musicians and with the opportunity to play with and learn from a number of highly experienced players drawn from the members of the world famous Grimethorpe Colliery Band.

Led by the hugely experienced brass educators and Musical Directors John Doyle and Garry Oglesby, and supported by members of the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, and the day will see FREE sessions provided to young players aged up to 19, with a team of players guiding their young protégés through a challenging and enjoyable programme of rehearsals, sectionals and a concert finale to which parents, family members and friends will be made welcome.

A spokesperson for the Grimethorpe Colliery Band told A4B: “The Trustees of the band have a vision; to inspire a new and wider generation of young people to take up an instrument and to experience everything that a musical education through a brass band has to offer. We believe that Grimethorpe, as a band which has creativity and innovation at its heart, has a unique ability to reach out to young people – to harness the power of performance-driven education to create a deep and lasting legacy of participation throughout more communities.

We believe that a sustainable “legacy” programme cannot be provided through a short-term burst of interest and excitement but, rather, through an offering of long-term pathways that help young people continue their interests into adulthood.

In short, Grimethorpe Colliery Band aims to continue to help inspire young people, as we have done for decades, to embark upon and embrace a musical habit for life.”

James Dickinson, Head of the Hull Music Service who are hosting the event at The Albemarle Music Centre, added: “We are delighted to be hosting such an exciting event. It will be wonderful for young brass players from across the region to have the opportunity to work with such experienced and inspirational musicians.”

John Doyle currently holds the position of Head of Performing Arts and Music at Lostock Hall Academy in Preston and is a teaching fellow of the University of Cumbria, a Fast Track Teacher and a ‘Champion Teacher’ for Musical Futures. He has also holds the title of ‘Champion Educator’ with Lancashire Music Service for his work as a dynamic Head of Music in the Lancashire region.
